Poor Attendance Embarrasses L.A. City Council; Delays Red Light Camera Decision

Sorry L.A., we just "couldn't make it on time" - Your City Council

UPDATE: Is American Traffic Solutions picking up and moving their HQ from Scottsdale, AZ to another state in order to save their contract with the city of Los Angeles? Remember the SB 1070 related boycott? Could they be moving to California?

As it stands right now, the Los Angeles red light scamera program is set to expire on July 31, 2011. However, L.A. City Council can’t seem to make a final decision, mainly due to poor attendance at their meetings.

Is American Traffic Solutions moving from Scottsdale to Los Angeles? Today’s vote and comments by city council members have sparked rumors everywhere

    Fixed it for ya.

The surprising thing to me was that three city council members didn’t bother showing up for the meeting, thus the 7-5 vote for dumping the cameras didn’t really mean anything. (They need an 8 person majority to get anything done, apparently). In Gilbert with its 9 city council members, and two are missing and a 4-3 vote occurs on a big issue, it’s final. There’s no 5 minimum vote required – if you think it’s important, you show up. LA’s rule on that is odd… I bet that ATS is thanking its lucky stars, and they are pulling out ALL the stops.

Who knows what kind of backroom deals are going on right now, promising a bigger piece of the revenue pie to the city’s coffers… not to mention the real graft and corruption that gets into government, such as NBC/Comcast and Meredith Baker – http://www.argumentclinic.com/ac-read_article.php?articleId=12983. Disgusting…

In other words, I wonder how long it will be before some undecided LA city council member waffles (or climbs off of the fence) and votes for the cameras… And then gets a cushy desk job at ATS pushing pencils around for some ridiculous salary after a little time has passed to cover up any sign of impropriety…

Maybe I’m just being a South Park-labeled cynical ahole, but there’s not much left that would surprise me in government anymore…

They still need 4-5 more votes to get their way. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but we’ll see.

If ATS moves from AZ to save this contract, that would still make my month.

I’d be really surprised if that a single city contract would ever be THAT valuable to a photo radar company, especially a larger one like ATS, to where they’d pull up stakes and move.

Then again.. it is $440 a ticket… Who knows what their actuaries/accountants are telling them.
