Mandatory “Black Boxes” to be Installed in All New Cars

Who needs a speed camera when your car will just alert the local police when you’ve been allegedly exceeding the speed limit?

The US Auto industry, which is gasping for air as we speak, has just been given a mandate by the Federal Gov’t which may finally kill it.

Per mandate, any car built or sold in the US will have one of these installed starting June 1, 2011

There will be bypass instructions on the Internet as soon as they are out.

  3. This seems like it is mainly about the mileage tax.

      Right, its always ‘taxes’.

If the box is disabled and its just a general spying black box, you’re an activist.

If the box is disabled and it tracks miles for taxes, you are a tax evader.

Neat scam to criminalize privacy and roll out new taxation at the same time.

As of today, the law about who actually owns the data in these boxes varies from state to state. In a majority of states, the owner of the car owns the data so the insurance companies can’t get that data without a subpoena/warrant.

This does mean, however, that if you’re speeding and you kill someone, even if someone breaks the law and it’s their fault, they WILL be getting that data from you every time.

I’ve complained about these black boxes (these EDRs) for years online, and nobody has ever listened. Maybe now that it’s too late, someone average Joes will listen…

  5. B says:

This data will not be usable for moving violations (speeding, etc.). That is, until they tie it into a complete monitoring system with GPS enabled (like OnStar). Then they’d have to be able to get the data automatically, via a networking device.

Coming in 2015 – “Gas tax elminiated – Per Mile taxation begins…

“Every American driver will be taxed per mile instead of at the gas pump, so your mileage will be done via the EDR and transmitted monthly back to a central database. You will be billed annually.”

And don’t be surprised if insurance lobbyists override the state laws at the federal level and try to claim ownership of the data in the case of ALL accidents.

Life insurance companies will be chomping at the bit, looking for any more ways to get out of paying on a policy in the case of a death. “The deceased was driving 12 MPH over the speed limit (47 in a 35) when that drunk driver in his giant SUV ran the red light and killed him instantly in a side impact accident. Because the deceased was breaking the law at the time of the accident, under section F, subsection U, the $400,000 life insurance policy is deemed null and void, and you will be receiving no payment. We’re sorry for your loss. Sincerely, … oh who gives a crap. Fuck you, loser… HAHAHA… Payday bonus for me!!”

Scenario #2: Health insurance… “Even though you were crippled by our client, EDR evidence shows that you were breaking inappropriately while driving. Due to neglect on your part, we’re only covering 50% of the bills. Your insurance company will have to cover the rest. We wish you a speedy recovery from your spinal injury.”

  6. I’m still not sure it is about taxes. It is about control and tracking. A “per mile” tax essentially already exists in the gas tax. It’s just that fuel efficient vehicles get taxed less. The gas tax also works to incentivize the public to use more fuel efficient cars which also helps reduce use of oil and is good for the environment. The only excuse for a mileage tax could be an opinion that “fuel efficient cars need to pay their fair share” which I have yet to hear. I’m not sure anyone thinks it is unfair for gas guzzlers to pay more taxes by means of more fuel consumption. There is no need for a mileage tax!
