Redflex “Frees Up” Police Officers to Go Serve Scamera Tickets

We’ve heard the argument over and over again from scamera apologists: Photo Radar frees up police to go do other things. Unfortunately, this could actually be true very soon.

SB 1018, which if passed, will authorize off-duty police to serve photo tickets before a complaint about the alleged “violation” has even been filed with the court. If it sounds like an extortion letter now, just wait until Redflex’s newly deployed “Green Police” come knocking on your door asking for your dollars. Even though this will be a chance to earn extra green, chances are that this “opportunity” will not be warmly received by officers who understand that the public needs to respect police for them to effectively protect us.

In typical Redflex fashion, their lobbyists, including Mike Williams – who looks like he’s really making the most of all the Arizona dollars his private foreign employer  is being funneled – will be attempting to sneak this measure through at the last minute.  Scam first, ask questions later, eh mates?

Also on the COW for tomorrow is SB 1443, which will greatly expand photo radar and what it can be used for in Arizona. We must remain vigilant against these bills and make our voices heard. If you’ve been watching the sessions at all, it’s clear that State Legislators are no longer in favor of photo radar, but seem to be too weak and money motivated to do the right thing and snuff it out.

Even if this passes, it won’t happen. I have friends in local law enforcement that “moonlight” and they get paid very well for just standing around doing nothing. I do not think they will chase around all over town wasting their time off and gas for the meager $8 to $10 they might receive for each ticket delivered.

Both these bills are a thinly vailed attempt to further embed Automated Ticketing into our daily lives, create additional violation opportunities for those who profit from it, and further erode the constitutional and due process protections for Arizona citizens. Call your representatives now and tell them to dump these two pieces of garbage.

These bills will ultimately make it to the governor’s desk, IMO, because the Redflex/ATS lobbyists have been masterful with these bills.

The key is Brewer. She’s not a fan of these systems, but who knows whether she’ll veto these bills or not.
