Red-Light Cams About Money, Not Safety

moneymanFrom the Washington Times:

Accidents jumped 43 percent at intersections with traffic cameras the last time Alexandria operated red-light cameras, between 1998 and 2005. That’s according to data compiled by the Virginia Transportation Research Council, a joint venture between the Virginia Department of Transportation and the University of Virginia. Statewide, accidents serious enough to cause injuries increased 18 percent at red-light camera intersections.

Redflex, American Traffic Solutions, Gatsometer, ACS… your jig is up.

Also reminds me of when Gandalf the Grey took a stand aganst the balrog in The Fellowship of The Ring and told it “You shall not pass!” He fought him to the bitter end, was resurrected as a White Wizard, and assumed the Head of the Order. Kind of prophetic of our movement I think. I love it.

  4. Further evidence of something that we all suspected.

  5. Not a blind sheep says:

It’s so funny how all you supporters don’t like to report anything that shows the cameras may be working, or anything that says further research may be needed. How about you encourage those who contribute to this site to report all news about photo radar, not just the news that benefits their agenda? Many of you all are intelligent and have valid complaints but you all look like morons when you back a group that knowingly leaves out information that does not benifit them. Good luck ever being taken seriously on any of this one sided information lol. http://westvalleyview.com/main.asp?SectionID=2&SubSectionID=1&ArticleID=35046&TM=85941.55

    • Why would we post pro-cam articles on an anti-cam website? That would be like Ford posting articles that are critical of its cars on its website.

The article you posted is laughable. They compare 2009 data to 2005. Why 2005? What about the other years? They have plenty of data about tickets issued, the cameras are good at that. Yet no solid data for injuries and fatalities. They cherry-pick June and the first three months of the program, but leave out Jan-May. When you have to be that selective, you’re hiding something.

And you have to love this quote:
“In addition, the number of fatal crashes is on a general decline, as well as the number of non-fatality traffic accidents, according to the DPS study.”

Yes, a decline that’s been happening non-stop for the past 3 decades. This is nothing new, and nothing that can be attributed to cameras.

    • And why aren’t you critical of the camera vendor and pro-camera websites for not including the news and articles we post here?

  6. Walter says:

This is an ANTI PHOTO ENFORCEMENT website.
The whole purpose of this site is to inform people of the hazards, corruption, And Illegal practices associated with Photo Enforcement.
Why would we want to allow pro camera opinions?

If I want to read about how great the cameras are supposed to be. I’ll buy a subscription to the Republic. Or I’ll watch 12 news. Neither of those two report a fair coverage of what Photo Enforcement is really all about.

Why do the “NEWS” stations not properly report the real reason for the reduction? The story gives the real reason for the decrease in fatalities. But it is only printed as a small side thought at the end of the story. Oh by the way…..

“On the other hand, construction zones may slow down motorists, thereby reducing the destructive “energy” that is a factor in traffic crashes, he said.”

Reduced destructive energy = fewer fatalities.

The cameras only slow traffic where the cameras are placed. They have no effect in other areas. What I have seen is that 50 yards after the cameras. Traffic is back up to the same speed they were going before the cameras.

That brings up another question. How much more pollution is being dumped into the environment by the constant slowing down and speeding back up that the cameras induce?

  7. Not a Blind Sheep says:

Photo Radar causes pollution lol, that is a pretty good one. So any time a person hits the brakes to slow down for a camera and then guns it to run passed the speed limit that is the photo radar cameras fault? So any cop that runs radar is doing the same thing so you don’t want anything to enforce the speed limit. People slow down when they see cops running radar too. So drop the whole pollution argument because you know that won’t take you anywhere.

There are so many intelligent posts on here by peopel who blindly follow a campaign that is full of holes and inaccurate information. It is a shame to see people waste their time witha group like this when they can seriously begin a movement of intelligent interaction to stop photo radar.

You also advised that the REAL reason that the crash statistics were down in the area of photo radar was because of the construction zones. You are absolutely right that the construction zones help to slow people down and reduce accidents. You decided that it wasn’t benificial to you to write anything about how the photo radar section they are speaking of in the story is 24 miles long yet you only want to talk about the 10 mile construction zone and say that, that is why accidents have gone down so drastically.

But just as the the group you blindly follows does, you decided to leave out information that does not benifit you which is why I say no one will ever take CameraFraud seriously as a valid political group, they will always be known as the wack jobs that like to vandalize stuff. That is what the photo radar companies want too and I can’t believe you morons don’t see that. That want you all to be known as the wack jobs so they don’t have to worry about you ever getting anything done.

I swear you guys must get your reports from 1 or 2 people, that is not a good way to represent yourself. Chase this issue down and look up the information, research what you are fighting for so the politicians of America actually take you seriously. Untill then CameraFraud will only be a group or of people on the internet who blindly join a website to fight Phot Photo Radar causes pollution lol, that is a pretty good one. So any time a person hits the brakes to slow down for a camera and then guns it to run passed the speed limit that is the photo radar cameras fault? So any cop that runs radar is doing the same thing so you don’t want anything to enforce the speed limit because it increases pollution, come on now you are reaching. People slow down when they see cops running radar too. So drop the whole pollution argument because you know that won’t take you or your cause anywhere.

There are so many intelligent posts on here by people who blindly follow a campaign that is full of holes and inaccurate information. It is a shame to see people waste their time with a group like this when they can seriously begin a movement of intelligent interaction and conversation to stop photo radar programs.

You also advised that the REAL reason the crash statistics were down in the area of photo radar was because of the construction zones. You are absolutely right that the construction zones help to slow people down and reduce accidents. You decided that it wasn’t beneficial though to you to write anything about how the photo radar section they are speaking of in the story is 24 miles long yet you only want to talk about the less than 10 mile construction zone and say that, that small section is the only reason why accidents have gone down so drastically.

Just as the group you blindly follows does, you decided to leave out information that does not benefit you which is why I say no one will ever take CameraFraud seriously as a valid political group, they will always be known as the wack jobs that like to vandalize stuff. That is what the photo radar companies want too, and I can’t believe you morons don’t see that they want you all to be known as the wack jobs so they don’t have to worry about your group ever accomplishing anything.

I swear you guys must get your reports from 1 or 2 people. That is not a good way to represent yourselves. Chase this issue down and look up the information, research what you are fighting for so the politicians of America actually take you seriously. Until then CameraFraud will only be a group of people on the internet who blindly join a website to fight Photo Radar cameras but have no idea why other than the fact that they don’t like paying speeding tickets. I am not talking about you on this Walter, but keep on having the people from this group vandalize equipment, threaten operators, and come up with petitions that never tally enough signatures and you will be taken about as seriously as those who feel the Black Helicopters are always watching them.

It’s funny, every once in a while I hear a report from this group about the negatives of Photo Radar, I look into it and go wow they are right, ok that’s cool. But almost immediately I find another report of how the cameras might be working in some places to make things safer, yet CameraFraud decides that they don’t need to talk about that lol.

By the way, you said that you can’t find valid information in the news because it is all biased? I could not possible agree with you more. It is so difficult to find any valid information via the news anymore, it is ridiculous. Every single story is spun a certain way. You have to look up the information yourself without following the news, which can be a little difficult which is why the CameraFraud group will never put that much effort into doing so. The story I presented was to show that this group is the same as any other one sided agenda oriented group. Those who participate in this group could care less about whether photo radar is a legit program, they only care that they cannot speed. You are one of many groups that deal with all kinds of topics that I enjoy posting in because I cannot stand when people waste the time of others with one sided garbage that will never amount to anything when those people could volunteer their time elsewhere to more important causes. Let’s say oh I don’t know jump on the recent ‘Stop On Red’ campaign and volunteer your time to make our intersections safer. No instead people in this group did not care about safety on the road at all and now that tickets are getting issues people are finally standing up and saying this isn’t right. Let me ask, where were all of you the passed few years when Arizona was one of the worst red light running states in the country. You were all sitting at home on your couches saying, “oh wow that sucks.”

Your time is valuable, volunteer for a group, any group, I don’t care what its about that actually has purpose and is taken seriously by the political structure of this state and country. We need volunteers more than you know! Stop wasting your time with violent supporting activists (obviously a select few, not all of you) who’s only valid complaint is paying traffic tickets not traffic safety. Deal with the tickets, it’s the only way many of you morons will slow down or oh I don’t know STOP at the red light. I call some of you morons because it is funny how some of you actually NEED to be reminded to stop at red lights lol. Do we need to send someone out there next to hold your hands as you drive to make sure you know what the big boy rules are?

More power to you and good luck Walter, you seem like you actually have a head on your shoulders unlike so many others on here, just don’t let this group label you as a wack job like it is doing to all of it’s members right now.

    • The polution aspect of photo radar comes from running ~46 vans for 24 hours a day. I haven’t finalized the numbers, but I believe this amounts to over 1 million extra pounds of CO2 pollution per year.

Quality, independent, extra research is needed, I think we all gree. But we already have some. The VDOT study showed red light accidents increased in Virginia at camera sites. The Floriday Public Health Review study seemed to be pretty well done. The NHTSA report that says less than 5% of all accidents are caused by exeeding the PSL is pretty reliable. The GTSAC study which says that 80% of all accidents occur below the PSL is another government study.

This is on top of the NUMBEROUS reports that show that an engineer solution for natural compliance is almost always the recommended solution over and above enforcement. In fact, if you read ADOT’s webpage, you’d realize that if there are a large number of violations somewhere, the problem is in the road design and or the speed limits are too low, and it is not the fault of the drivers:
      http://www.dot.state.az.us/Highways/Traffic/Speed.asp

But I’m sure those sources don’t qualify as being good enough in your opinion. But if those sources aren’t good enough, nothing ever will be.

  8. Not a Blind Sheep says:

Thanks to anyone who is bored and crazy enough to read this insanely long post lol. I did forget though to include another piece from the story that you, Walter, decided to leave out. “Typically, construction zones can create more hazards and increase the crash numbers,” he said.
    – Come on guys report it all or don’t report anything. You are no better than FOXNews, MSNBC, CNN, or any of the other biased crazy so called news sites out there, which I will say again is why you never be taken seriously.
