Statewide Anti-Camera Petition Drive Begins in Maryland

A Bethesda businessman and former Congressional candidate, Daniel Zubairi, has launched a petition drive which would force SB-277, statewide speed cameras, to a referendum. They have created an organization “Maryland for Responsible Enforcement” and a website to promote the referendum and have filed the required paperwork with the state. There is also a Facebook Group dedicated to the effort.

Maryland rules on forcing a new law to a referendum are extremely strict, requiring a petition with signatures equal to 3% of the total number of votes cast for governor in the last election, or 53,650. Those signatures must all be collected within 60 days of the bill’s passage and must be hand-written (not electronic). However if the drive is successful the chances of a statewide vote overturning the legislature is strong : despite claims by speed camera supporters that the devices are popular, no speed camera program has ever survived a referendum vote.

We will have more on this as it develops.

well if their cf site is any indication of the number of people against the cams… they are sunk before they start.. they have less people than scam does at his pathetic site!!!

  2. Stacey says:

I just read your post and all the sudden I pictured a dancing cockroach. How the hell do you have that effect on people? Creepy.

  3. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

some would call it… charm!! do you fantasies about roaches? are you stalking me?

get back in the kitchen… dinner dishes need washing!!!

  4. What we really need to be afraid of is the new head of the NHTSA. This guy is bad news:

  5. Actually LAB, public opinion in the DC/Balt area is about 80% against the scameras according to one of the DC papers and we don’t even have them statewide yet. DC and Montgomery County, MD have introduced us to the scam and we continue to learn more from your Nazi Arizona.

The MD Senate bill initially failed, then the Gov pulled some shady backroom maneuvers to get his troops to fall in line, and the majority crooks in our House were openly ordered (or else…) by their Fuehrer, the Gov, to put a stop to all amendments (like having someone independent of the crooked contractors calibrate the machines and do so weekly instead of annually, having the fines generated returned to MD citizens in the form of tax breaks or other fund, SPECIFICALLY EXCLUDING MD LEGISLATORS FROM BEING EXEMPT FROM SPEED SCAMERA CITATIONS, require the Operator to be present at trial if requested, require at least one worker actually be present in “Work Zone” speed traps, and some others). The police union in Montgomery County has ordered their officers not to pay or agree to any speed scamera citations even in non-emergency citation situations (even though a vehicle owner (Police Dept) can legally “turn in” the actual driver of the vehicle).

So don’t worry, we have plenty of opposition to scameras here and it will only grow as the scameras go up. And we also have plenty of “Law A. Bidingcitizens” here too- the MD Legislators and police unions which refuse to be held accountable by the very law that is purported to be all about safety and protecting drivers.
Forgot to mention excellent post. Can’t wait to reading the next post!

  6. fukMDscameras says:

And by the way, we have a pretty good track record here in MD when it comes to defeating widely unpopular Legislative actions. After 4 years of the legislator Fing up and not legalizing slots because the Dem legislature didn’t want a Repub Gov to get credit I guess (same Repub Gov who vetoed Speed Scameras in 2006), the issue was forced to Referendum and the voters legalized them unanimously. Last year, the morons in the legislator at the last second tried to sneak in a “Computer Services Tax”, which generated so much outrage and opposition from the day it was passed from individuals and groups like the MD Chamber of Commerce, that the Gov was forced to call for a special session and repeal said tax before it ever even got to take effect.

So despite legalizing slots the legislature can’t find acceptable contracts for them and our neighbors in Delaware, Pennsylvania and West VA all have slots/casinos and NO SPEED SCAMERAS, and we here in MD still don’t have slots running and are going to now further drive down and discourage tourism with a nice Big Brother Scamera visitor fee. Even the retards in our legislature will eventually figure out that this scenario is a huge recipe for failure for our tourism industry, assuming the MD voters don’t do it for them first- again.

  7. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

fuk- a lot of written words from you and zero links.. so it is all your opinion …. at least the tin hats here try and back up their claims!!!

again the lack of volume at the cf site lends me to believe that nobody really cares…. you have a lot of sigs to gather in a very short time…why you wasting time with me? bye bye!!

  8. Dan G says:

Hey fu*MDscameras! Public opinion that I found is also wildly AGAINST cameras. I have only found 1 – YES, THAT’S ONE PERSON ONLY – out of many that is in full support of radar cameras. The rest hate them. Of course, my empirical evidence is far from scientific, nor did I bother to make an actual count (other than the 1) but overwhelmingly against them.

Another thing, I posted some photos of a scam artist in operation. Comments on one of the photos would tell you that I spent about an hour calling attention to the hidden sign. I’m 6’4″, lift weights, and hard to miss on the side of the road waving at passing cars then pointing to a partially hidden sign. Support I saw was also wildly in my favor. Thumbs up, smiles, waves, ok signs, pointing, all favorable. Again 1 – ONLY 1 PERSON – flipped me off for ‘enhancing’ a hidden sign in an hour’s time (was that you lab??).

So lab’s right – don’t waste time responding to his comments, GO GET THOSE FREEKIN’ SIGNATURES ALREADY!!

  9. Michael Milstead says:

We only need 54000 signatures to get it on the ballot.

  10. GPS Angel says:

Hey… if it helps, we’ll give you a free GPS Angel with battery pack for the person who adds the 54,000 signature. It’s not 20K mosquito nets or a cameo in a video game, but it worked for Ashton to get to 1M twitter followers.

  11. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

milstead… but you only have 60 days!!! and you will need more than what they require as some will not be valid..good luck!! cause you are going to need it… i hope you have a nascar race to set up at..

  12. Mike says:

LAB asking for sources? Now THAT’S funny!!

I think LAB and the other trolls here think that if they flood this board with pro-camera rhetoric that it will hurt our cause. I think quite the opposite is true.

  13. fukMDscameras says:

aw man LAB, you got me! I MADE IT ALL UP!… therefore, no links or cites. I just figured if the pro-camera people get to make stuff up (like “it’s all about safety”, “it’s not about the cash cow, cha ching!”,”cameras saves lives”, “the cameras can’t/don’t lie”, “the cameras/guns are reliable”), then why can’t I throw around some lies and propaganda? I wanted to troll some pro-speed camera blog sites to do this but I couldn’t find any!… so I guess I’m stuck with you 😦 At least until the referendum is approved by the MD Attorney General, then I can head down to Camden Yards and set up shop at the Orioles games.

  14. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

mike- your cause is hurt by the lies and mistruths that CF posts.. you can get away with it here with just myself and geez and 777 calling them on it.. try that stuff with tv and radio.. they will expose you!! cause should CF collect enough sigs to get this to the ballot box… those media outlets will be at CF’s doors… and they have lots of people that do research!!!

fukmd- why would we need a site..last i checked the cam’s were already up in this state.. i would imagine that is it goes to the polls one will spring up//financed by redflex ir ats i hope!!! until then.. in your state.. maybe you should go get some sigs.. and if you have your own site… why are you here? oh thats right… your site is DEAD!! CAUSE NOBODY CARES THERE!!!

  15. Mike says:

I think Walmart has a sale on Purina Troll Food. You might want to look into it.

  17. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

sorry mike… i dont shop at white trash mart!!!

  18. guttersn1pe says:

DPS is launching their own “grassroots initiative” to address much of the “mis-information” about photo radar. Sounds like their own sign-wave is coming to town. Implies that groups like CF are making a difference.

  19. RPr says:

where did you get that snipe?

  20. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

no gutter… while i am not surprised that you would think that…. it could not be further from the truth… i mean how scared could they be of 10-20 tin hat wearing clowns? no what they are doing is dispelling all the lies, mistruths and innuendo that CF put out as fact!!!

  21. geez says:

I hope you all are so proud and happy now…. who’s gonna make the fucking smart ass comment about 3 down more to go.

  22. geez says:

ya fucking moderate my comment assholes.

[ADMIN RESPONSE: Anytime the “F” word is used the comment is held for moderation automatically.]

  23. Just on the news… drive-by shooting of camera van driver at Loop 101 & 7th Ave. It was only a matter of time.

  24. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

sorry scam… do i detect a hint of celebration ? i will not be surprised to find out that it was a member of this site!! wont that be some great publicity?

  25. Stacey says:

    Law Abiding Citizen,

There was absolutely no reason for the employee to be shot and killed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to this man’s family. Camerafraud does not condone acts of violence. We are opposed to the outsourcing of law enforcement. This why we are collecting signatures for the ballot initiative. If you want change, you vote on it. Intimidation is a repressive tool that makes a mockery out of democracy.

LAB, you have always scared me. At this point, I am ready to make the police aware of your obsession with members of this forum. You have not only posted personal information about us, but you have also e-mailed and harassed members with some very frightening and intimidating scenarios you would like to see happen to us.

  26. Walter says:

When I gather signatures. I have a lot of people tell me “I have a gun. I’ll just shoot the cameras.” I always tell them “I have a pen. My way is legal”. I hope no one at this site was involved. And I hope they catch the person responsible. My prayers go out to the family of the van operator.

  27. guttersn1pe says:

I got it from an email that was forwarded to me from a friend. The email originally came from a DPS Lt.

  28. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

admin… this is a joke.. she threatens me , i respond, my post defending myself gets deleted and her post remains…. wow…. now that fair… so i will try it again…

STACEY- if you think you have a case,,, then make a call… but i feel the need to warn you… filing a false police report is a felony…. i have NEVER posted anybodies home address ( i dont have them) or phone numbers ( i dont have them) where they work ( i dont know that) .. i posted glyphs name… big deal… i got it right off of this site on the discussions section….my name was posted… did you hear my whine?

so go ahead … make that call… and waste a police officers time… since i live in gilbert you may want to start there…. and i will make sure that they know you filed a false report…

  29. I'm Back says:

Why don’t you give it a rest today? A family has been ruined and you choose to attack members of our organization for your own agenda.

Again, my heart goes out to the Redflex driver’s family. If I was admin on this site, I would have a tough time letting any of your inflammatory statements along with those who seem to be happy about this tragedy post today. Seriously give it a rest. I’m asking you to see further than the hand in front of your face.

  30. Doc says:

ADMIN-I agree with Stacey. LAB has stirred up issues with people here too many times. Now to accuse one of us, who agree with the premise of hating the cameras, hating how they got done…etc., all of the members commonly posting against scameras & talivans have never condoned or threatened any more than getting photos of the talivan operators, & scamera operations, not VIOLENCE. I for one would not miss lab ever. All this does is make US look poorly. Why would we do that? For this person to come on here & accuse us…well, In my humble opinion, he just needs to go.

My Prayers & thoughts join with Stacey’s , Walter’s, & all the quality members on this site for the family of Doug Gerogianni.

  31. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

im back… i will give it a rest when some members give it a rest… check out scams ramblings today!! think mine are worse….? not by a long shot… and puke gammill at the discussions pages…. he claims the guy had it coming…

all i have done is exploit the sickening posts by others… now i dare you to come back and tell me i am out of line!!!

  32. Law A. Bidingcitizen says: show me the post where i accused anybody here? i said it would not surprise me.. and keep in kind .. that was last night… long before the killer was arrested… funny how at the press conference CF was brought up…. and it was not me there… so doc.. you keep calling for my expulsion…. be my guest… you have done worse than i… but your arrogance and the stool you produce from that arrogance has now gone past your eyes so that you can not see … when you point at my .. there are 3 fingers pointing right back at you!!!

  33. I'm Back says:

You are completely out of line. I won’t ask you again, because you never listen to anyone other than yourself. I’m done with this topic because I refuse to cheapen what has happened.

  34. WOW says:

    can i post here?

  35. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

qre you accusing me of talking to myself? i think you are out of line… you dont even know me….

    wow…. post away!!

  36. Doc says:

FOR THE RECORD; “you show me the post where i accused anybody here?”

April 19, 2009 at 11:05pm “i will not be surprised to find out that it was a member of this site!!wont that be some great publicity?”

There’s th’ post. I won’t speak for anybody else, but that sounds like an accusation to me. You, lab, have proven yet again, just how low & classless you really are. You need to be gone. It’s actually been interesting at times…But it’s time for you to permanently go away from this site.

  40. Michael Milstead says:

Here is the local story on the scameras.1,000 petition
gaitherers in less than a week.

Less than a week after state lawmakers approved a measure allowing speed cameras statewide, opponents of the legislation launched a campaign to put the issue before voters on the 2010 ballot.
Organizers notified the state Board of Elections on Thursday that they intend to collect the more than 53,000 signatures necessary to give voters the final say.

Already, 1,000 people have offered to collect signatures for a petition to bring the issue to a statewide referendum, said Daniel Zubairi, chairman of Maryland for Responsible Enforcement, the group leading the effort.

The organization is attracting interest through a Web site,, and a Facebook group that had 815 members by noon Tuesday.

News of the campaign has spread rapidly, via the Internet, and “the nature of the legislation has inspired a lot of people,” said Zubairi, a former Republican congressional candidate who lives in Bethesda.

The group must collect one-third of the required signatures by May 31 and the total amount by June 30. Volunteers plan to canvass grocery stores, community centers, farmers’ markets and Metro stations, said Zubairi.

On April 10, the General Assembly authorized a bill allowing counties and municipalities statewide to install speed enforcement cameras near schools and in highway work zones.

The measure allows local jurisdictions to issue $40 tickets to speeders photographed going 12 mph or more above the posted limit. Drivers would not receive points on their license.

Montgomery County has had a speed camera program in place since 2007. The county’s program includes residential streets. That would not change as part of the new legislation, which O’Malley is expected to sign.

Supporters say the cameras slow traffic and make roads safer.

Republicans in the House of Delegates and the Senate opposed the devices, saying they are revenue generators that do little to improve public safety and citing privacy concerns.

Fines generated by the camera are a “hidden tax,” Zubairi said.

  41. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

are you trying to make the people here at CF jealous?

CF cant get 20 people to collect signatures… let alone 1000… keep in mind… victory comes at the polls… not by signatures!!!

  42. trf12567 says:

LAB, you are the perfect citizen for a completely socialist government, which is the direction this country is taking. Using cameras instead of real officers is nothing more then a revenue generator and is unconstitutional. All in the name of safety. Sounds like another revenue generator called the seat-belt law. It’s suppose to protect us and our passengers. They want to put speed cameras around school to protect our kids. Why not just put a real officer there, which would not only protect our kids from speeders, but from other dangers like drug dealers, violence and possible abduction. While they are at it, maybe they should put seat-belts on the school buses that transport the same kids they claim to be protecting, but that would cost money now wouldn’t it. They don’t want to do that. So you go ahead and be a good little citizen and follow blindly at everything the government crams down your throat, no matter how much it infringes on your constitutional rights. Maybe one day they will make a law you think is wrong, like taking away your freedom of speech, then maybe you’ll stand up against it. However, by then it will be too late.

  43. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

trf- by the tone of your pathetic, whinning post.. we must already be there!!! the cops are outnumbered… always have been always will be…. SO lets go with your analogy…. we have a cop monitoring a school … he catches someone driving too fast in the school zone… he pulls them over.. while writing the ticket out another 10 do the same thing AND a dealer makes a sale at the church right down the road to the 4th grade boy!!! the camera of course can not stop the dealer…. but it can snap anyone that speeds in the zone… as it is now.. some people when they see a cop has someone pulled over think it is party time and they can do what they want~~ as for the seat belts… call your local school!!!

  44. zero says:

    down with Speed cameras!
if you cant see big brother salivating to get total control and line its pockets by this scam…you probably would be more at ease living in cuba, venezuela or north korea.

My blood boils when otherwise smart people take the bait that this unconstitutional cash cow is not an invasion of privacy or effortless fleecing of tax payer wealth but is somehow driven out of the kindness of your so-called leaders hearts.
