Rep. Arrested, Injured While Opposing Photo Radar

From TheNewspaper.com:

The mayor of Duncanville, Texas had a member of the city council arrested last Tuesday for speaking out against the use of red light cameras during an official meeting. The incident took place during the discussion of whether the city should spend $59,000 to make street repairs. Mayor David Green recognized Councilman Paul Ford to speak on the contract item.

“Thank you,” Ford said. “I want to let you know that earlier this evening during briefing, Mayor Green threatened me that if he told me to stop talking and I didn’t, he’d have me arrested, and I want to let you know what I told Mayor Green.”

Green became outraged and shouted, “Mr Ford, you are out of order. You are not recognized Mr Ford. You need to cease right now.”

While Green yelled, Ford continued his brief statement without stopping.

Unlike those thousands of people who are getting red light camera tickets, I will have the opportunity for a jury trial. It will be a jury of my peers and I will confidently put my fate in their hands. And now I’m going to discuss agenda item number three. I will vote against it, and here’s why.”

[…]

Brown did not respond. Mayor Green had the audio of the city council video tape turned off as Brown dragged the councilman out of the chamber. Ford ended up hospitalized from injuries sustained during the arrest.

lets get it right guys….this guy has been a problem child before at the council meetings and he was warned. the mayor did the wrong thing for the right reasons … now this guy is camerafrauds hero!! you guys seem to like the guys that get arrested!!

  2. RPr says:

    The video

  3. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

that was a laugher!!! in basketball it is called a flop!! thats what the councilman did as he goes out of sight… he flopps… by letting out some loud scream… what a joke!!! if your not going to resist as you claim…. then put your hands behind your back… looked to me like there was no excessive force!!! maybe we should get clown sheltons opinion on it… he has been arrested a time or two!!

  4. Brent says:

Contracts issue aside- why isn’t this making news?… Our lazy mainstream media is again asleep at the wheel..

  5. I'm Back says:

The MSM is dying, that’s why. Local news stations in AZ are sharing video footage due to budget issues.

  6. Here’s another thing they didn’t cover. AZ Republic was quick to report about the alleged reduction in accidents in Tempe, but they didn’t report the whole story (big shock).

I obtained a copy of the data from the Tempe police department. They boasted a 16% city wide reduction in accidents (actually it was 15.5%) for which they gave full credit to the 14 cameras that they have. What they didn’t report is that fatalities INCREASED by 43%, and accidents with injuries decreased by only 2%. Minor accidents comprised 83% of the total and showed the largest decrease, but cameras are about safety, and the roads aren’t safer if there are more fatalities and about the same injuries happening.

If cameras are truly about safety, then the injury-free and death-free accidents are of little concern. You true safety results are 2% fewer injuries and 43% MORE deaths.

    My write-up is at http://photoradarscam.wordpress.com/2009/04/15/tempe-photo-enforcement-propaganda-exposed/?csspreview=true

  7. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

wow scam ..that sounds like a really big number…. but what were the actual number of fatalities? let me help you with the math…. if in 2007 there were 2 deaths and then in 2008 there were 4 then that is a 50% increase… sounds like a big number… but in reality it was only 2 more…
to put it simply scam… if you dont think a camera that makes people slow down is decreasing overall safety then you are a fool… and why do you keep pushing your dull, boring and lifeless web site on everybody? you do it at az central and everywhere else !! guess what… its not helping!!!

    • Michael Danes says:

Let me help you with the math!!!If in 2007 there were 2 deaths and in 2008 there were 4 that is a double increase wich make it 100%.
Should be 3(three) to make it 50% increase.Bad math doesn’t help for sure.Unless you are looking for fraud!!!
You can keep your cameras, anyway; but don’t be a fool to believe that such a camera would improve safety. It may …at that particular spot but will decrease at the rest of places.
Those cameras are real moneymakers.I would support pretty much anything as long as doesn’t involve a third party like Redflex. Because a third party means FRAUD.With those said
millions paid to install and operate the cameras you can pay a bunch of cops…one for each intersection.
You don’t spend millions that way when you expect safety improvements. That means someday everybody will drive legall and cameras will become useless. You spend millions when you expect to make millions.
Above all …those cameras are financial instruments way more than safety devices.

  8. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

actually if you go to the you tube site the audio is not turned off and you can hear the councilman faking his brutality !!!

  9. Walter says:

Another thing Tempe failed to mention in that report is the amount of construction that occurred on and around Rural Rd. During the time of the so called reduction in accidents. There was major construction on University. That severely limited access onto Rural road from the south. Road construction around Rural and the 202 also restricted access from the north. The New Football practice field on the east side of Rural caused traffic problems throughout most of last year. I think the reduction in traffic due to people advoiding the construction on Rural Rd. was more than likely the cause of the reduction in accidents. Not the cameras. The 5% reduction in accidents on Priest is about the same as the overall reduction in the amount people drove due to outragiously high fuel cost.

Here is the link to the article on the report.

  10. Jeff Hicks says:

For me, the issue is that the police are doing this for revenue. If they want to say it’s about safety, then why must they charge money for it? Simply revoke or restrict the license of the unsafe driver.

Second point, for Law A. Bidingcitizen is, this is what freedom of speech and democracy sounds like–people giving opinions in support or opposition or open dialogue, and yes, it is helping. This comment, by the way, comes to you from the Netherlands. Laws are not written in stone.

Third point, is that the back and forth arguments over statistics shows that numbers are every bit as susceptible to spin as is the verbiage that surrounds them. Statistics tell us more, in a more reliable fashion, about the agenda of those that invoke them, than they do about how some situation actualy is or should be. So, let’s all stop hiding behind numbers and keep up the open debate. Stop hiding behind ‘scientific analysis’ as if it was the last word, and as if it was more valid than public opinion. Behind the numbers and quantification of any report, are the very qualitative subjective discussions and opinions of the author. If Tempe newspaper backs the camears, let ’em say so, instead of hiding behind numbers they spin to their own advantage. If the polic need more money, let ’em make that request through the already available channels. In a democracy, public opinion trumps all.

  11. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

jeff- i think you missed my point… scams constant advertising his web site is not helping because he is not getting anyone to go there….the exchange of ideas is very helpful…it is sad however when one side does not get a fair shake when it comes to sending posts!!

  12. Jeff, the US is not a democracy, it is a republic. There is a big difference. But your point is taken. In the US, the media is known as the “fourth estate.” It is the media that the public relies upon (at least until fairly recently) to keep the government in check. In this case, there is no argument over what the numbers say really. The statements that the AZ Republic made are factually accurate but they did cross the line into speculation when they tried to credit the cameras for the changes. The real argument is that all of the numbers (the complete picture) were never presented. This is lying by omission. The raw data for the report is a very small table, it could have easily been included in the article to provide full objectivity to let people draw their own conclusions from the facts. They included plenty of other numbers, and they should have included the breakdown as well if the author really wanted to be “fair and balanced,” which is all we really want in the end.

It may be difficult to tell, but I do not really attribute the change in accidents in Tempe to the cameras. The data is too incomplete to be conclusive; however, the statements I did make reflected the same logic an correlation as that made in the Arizona Republic article, which is using their faulty logic against them.

LAB, I appreciate your concern for the well-being of my website. Trust me, the traffic numbers are fine and are increasing every month, especially considering that I do no advertising and the site is only 4 months old. You seem to forget that I don’t have members. I am running a website, not an organization like CameraFraud. If you’re referring to the blog portion of the site, you should know that you cannot judge the popularity of a blog by how many comments you see. I’ve run several websites with blogs and message boards and you should know that only a small fraction of visitors ever bother to post regardless of the content. These are websites that I have sold for 6-figures, so they were popular. And if you read the comments you will see that both sides are allowed to post. I do have a “no troll” policy though, and I delete all posts by trolls.

How is your website going? I really am concerned that your website isn’t doing very well. You never seem to mention it.

  13. Will Kay says:

Sounds like a lawsuit may come out of this one. Whether or not it goes anywhere reamins to be seen, but this will get some press.

Mr. Law A. Bidingcitizen and his bleeding heart liberal point of view once again seems to think that getting the word out is a one way street. Nothing could be further from the truth. More and more people everyday are beginning to understand the true motive and intent behind these camera systems, 24/7 surveillance and revenue. Those willing to sacrifice liberty for what the media purports as safety deserve neither.

  14. Stacey says:

Hey, LAB, your pro-camera website is spectacular! I have never seen anything like it before.

  15. Doc says:

    law breakin hypocrite & other trolls-T.E.A. party 2nite, 6 to 8 p., Prescott courthouse square-I’ll be there…will you?

    Remember…F R E E D O M ! ! !-Doc from Prescott

  16. Doc says:

TROLL(s)-TOO BLOODY COLD FOR POLITICAL T-SHIRT. DOC FROM PRESCOTT WILL BE WEARING AN AMERICAN FLAG BANDANNA, A BLACK LEATHER JACKET, & A DENIM CUT-AWAY WITH A BIG PATCH ON THE BACK THAT SAYS,”PISSED OFF” ON IT.

  17. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

doc- please take your meds before heading out in that garb(age)!!!

stacey- i see that you have found the real message boards.. not the discussion board that has no real discussions…. then again there is more conversation there than at scams site… as for my site? i never claimed to have one… do you? dont poke a stick at me if you dont have your own…. you are just a member here… and you sure as hell didnt start the thing!!

will kay- why do you label me? liberal? what is that ? really? think hard becasue it is a very broad defenition and i will be surprised if you can nail it.. i am just someone who dislikes the assholes that drive 70 plus on the freeways AND GET AWAY WITH IT!! does that make me a liberal?

and finally SCAM…. the last “post” at your site, other than mine which i am sure you erased, and your own was over 2 weeks ago!!! if business was as good as you claim i would think that the volume would yield some people leaving a post!!! is camerfraud and organization? AND LYING BY OMISSION IS WHAT THIS SITE IS ALL ABOUT!! oops i mean organization!!

  18. Will Kay says:

LAB, why are you so annoyed by speeders? What did they ever do wrong to you? You’re for these camera systems just so you can take some gratification in them getting caught for speeding? You feel vindicated or justified by these foreign corporations issuing illegal and unenforceable citations? I saw a DPS trooper on a motorcycle doing 70 plus on NB 101 in Scottsdale this morning. Didn’t bother me any. You are not responsible for anyones actions but your own. Let them speed. Their Karma will come back around sooner or later. It always does.

  19. Doc says:

law breaking hypocrite & troll associates-Well, I just got back from the Prescott T.E.A. Party. I looked for you & other trolls. I looked for anybody with an Austrailian accent. No one. I looked for anybody that was against the premise of the Rally…not a single one. Where were you? I was so looking forward to you starting trouble with me. I’m very dissapointed. However…there’s a bright side to your absence this evening. You prove me correct, again, when I state how worthless you, your associates, & your thoughts & ideas really are. You’re weak. You’re a liar. You’re no more than a loud nothing, with nothing intelligent to type…just your incoherant drivel. Just a lam-o piece of s#!t, lamely ranting on like so many worthless, mindless automitons, controlled by your handlers. In fact, you are simply a willing slave…allowing, in fact desiring to be controlled by some pathetic moron in some office, who’s in America illegally. You’re a disgrace.—

No more for you…it’s all just empty, hollow garbage from you.

    Remember…F R E E D O M ! ! !-Doc from Prescott

  20. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

doc!! why are you starting with the trash talk… especially after i humiliated you a few weeks ago? you opened that meth head mouth of yours..i met your challenge and you broke like a twig in the wind!! what were you protesting now? taxes? how many protests do you have to be a part of before you wake up and realize… maybe you doc,,, YOU are the problem!!! nothing but bitching and moaning about your world!! the loud mouthed chest pounding is coming from you!!! what protest are you attending tomorrow?

Will- i drove this valley for 4 years, about 1000 miles a week.. i got tired of people with very little concern for others safety.. it was all about them… their time was more valuable than anybody else… there are not even close to enough cops on the road!! and those that want to blatantly endanger others lives know it… so they do as they please… the cameras are slowing people down!!! and if you are going to drive like an ass then you will get your picture taken… and a ticket issued!! AND IF YOU WANT TO ROLL THE DICE AND NOT PAY IT!! then by all means ..dont pay it…. but i know those that dont are pooping their pants the next time they get pulled over not knowing for sure if that ticket stuck or not!!

and finally … i dont care where the company is from that has the contracts…. redflex has brought jobs to this state as well as ats… if clown doc really wants to get his panties in a bunch ..why is he not upset with companies that send our jobs to china? bet he is a wal mart shopper… or as i like to call it… white trash wal mart!!! lets see meth head protest them!!! oh wait,,, i guess he cant protest who he works for!!!

  21. Jeff Hicks says:

PhotoRadarScam: Thanks for your reply–although the charter that distinguishes a republic from a democracy is still changeable by the governed. On a different and more important point, there is no objectivity–this is the ‘view from nowhere,’ and ‘facts’ are always dependent on the perspective from which they are viewed. Slowly, the death grip of ‘objective’ science as the be-all, end-all justification and arbiter of ‘truth’ is loosening, but only very slowly (and less slowly in the US than in Europe or Asia). This is not to quibble over words, but just to ask that experts on all sides of this or any other issue stop hiding beind the putatively objective ‘facts,’ and just say what they mean. If the police or the government needs more money, let them ask for it through available, transparent and subject-to-vote means already available.

And, still, the question (naive though it is) remains unanswered: If the purported purpose is safety, why must they charge money for it? And why is this simple question not asked more often?

  22. Law A. Bidingcitizen says:

jeff .. you sound so smart yet ask such a stupid question…. if your kid steals something from the local grocery store.. do you punish them? or just say..well thats ok just dont do it again? and if they do it again…what then… laws without consequences are not laws at all… just suggestions… of how one should behave and or conduct themselves…. humans dont do well when left unchecked for their behavior..

  23. Jeff Hicks says:

Stupid questions are a specialty of mine, thanks. I’m fine with punishing drivers that endanger others’ safety, like I often did when I was younger (and even more stupid). But there seems to be this complicating factor that the police are after the money as well–some say that’s the first priority, with safety second; the police of course talk about the reverse. So let’s separate the safety and the money. If people are unsafe, take their license away, and if they still drive, put them in jail. And if the police/government need/want more money, let them go through channels already established for that purpose.

  24. Walter says:

    Jeff.
Stupid questions may be a specialty of yours. I also specialize in it occasionally. But LAB has the art of stupidity perfected. Just look at his statement about cops having the right to make you get out of your car.

  25. Dru says:

It’s people like LAB who allow simple liberties in the name of “protection” or “slowing people down” which will turn Arizona and other states slowly, ever slowly into a police state like the UK — which hasn’t stopped crime.

As Owen Paterson, Shadow Roads Minister (UK), put it: “Speed cameras cannot detect inappropriate speed for the conditions. They can only enforce an arbitrary limit. We need human beings on the road to judge what’s dangerous and what’s not.”
